Abstract

Purpose: To analyze the influence of early or late postoperative enteral nutrition on the clinical outcome of the patients.

Methods: This retrospective study is based on the medical records of 106 patients who underwent emergency bowel surgery at a university hospital in Daejeon from January, 2007 to October, 2012. Outcome were measured by clinical course and postoperative changes in blood index.

Results: Early enteral nutrition (EEN) is more beneficial than late enteral nutrition (LEN) in terms of time to first flatus or defecation, percentage of patients admitted to ICU, length of ICU stay and length of hospital stay.

Conclusion: The result of this study suggested that EEN by mouth has a positive effect on the clinical process of the patients after emergency bowel surgery.
